An independent research library specializing in the humanities, the Newberry has been free and open to the public since 1887. The Newberry’s public programming reflects the subject strengths of its collection of 1.5 million books, 5 million manuscript pages, and 500,000 maps. Recent exhibitions have explored civilian life during the Civil War, Chicago’s complicated relationship with World War I, and the many ways love has been expressed in letters, music, Valentines, and even maps throughout the past 500 years of human history.
