At Ghirardelli, our chocolate is as rich as our heritage. We started in San Francisco more than 160 years ago, making us America’s oldest continuously operating chocolate maker.
THE GHIRARDELLI DIFFERENCE
At Ghirardelli, creating premium, high-quality chocolate is our time-honored tradition and our passion. We maintain our commitment to excellence by controlling the entire chocolate making process from bean to finished product – one of a few companies in the world to do so. This has allowed us to create our own unique process that we call The Ghirardelli Difference, developed to ensure high-quality standards are maintained for a rich and delicious chocolate experience each and every time.
SAN FRANCISCO: OUR BIRTHPLACE
Our birthplace is an essential part of what makes Ghirardelli so special.
More than 160 years ago, our founder Domingo Ghirardelli started his namesake chocolate company in San Francisco. Nearly two centuries later, we’re proud to continue carrying on the entrepreneurial spirit held by Domingo Ghirardelli in the same city known for its open-minded optimism and possibility.
Our iconic 15-foot-high Ghirardelli light bulb sign, erected in 1923, is a San Francisco historical landmark that greets ships and visitors from all around the world as they enter the Bay beneath the Golden Gate Bridge.
Our flagship ice cream shop and store in Ghirardelli Square greets hundreds of thousands of visitors annually with its iconic hot fudge sundaes. This ice cream shop, along with our 17 other flagship stores, has created magical memories for families and loved ones for generations.
Each fall, our Ghirardelli Chocolate Festival brings together thousands of people in Ghirardelli Square for a weekend of chocolate tastings, ice cream, and educational chocolate seminars. All proceeds for this annual event benefits Project Open Hand, a local, nonprofit organization that provides meals to seniors and the critically ill. In addition to Project Open Hand, Ghirardelli partners closely with a variety of San Francisco organizations, including the San Francisco Giants and San Francisco General Hospital, for whom we make a special line of chocolates and donate a portion of the proceeds to.
