Gaugin: Artist as Alchemist

Price — $14.00 – $29.00

Sun 25 Jun 2017 - Sun 10 Sep 2017

Gauguin: Artist as Alchemist is the first exhibition to explore the artist’s radical experiments in the applied arts, underscoring his achievements not only as a painter, but also as a sculptor, printmaker, and decorator.

Explore more than 240 works exploring Gaugin's ambition to push boundaries and defy tradition. This exhibit explores the artist's unpredictable and, at times, fantastical forays into the applied arts while situating them within the realm of complete artistic freedom. Featuring his work in ceramics, woodcarving, printmaking, and furniture decoration, and their relationship to his canvases, the exhibition acknowledges the artist as a visionary and controversial figure.

Perhaps best known for his paintings of women in idyllic Tahitian settings, Paul Gaugin was an artist who career spanned the glove and whose prolific body of work flouts categorization. An expert at self promotion, Gauguin shed the social and artistic conventions of the time to defy definition and transform the perception of what it meant to live within the realm of complete artistic freedom.
